When I first asked myself this question I was full of judgement.
Which is weird, I asked me.
Something made me think I should be embarrassed.
Embarrassed because answers came to mind quickly and easily showing me a truth I’d not been seeing.
But I’d never connected them this way before.
Ultimately that’s what coaching is all about.
Supporting someone to truth.
For me it was like this.
You say you want to feel energised, clear headed, focused.
Which of your actions are taking you in the exact opposite directions of where you say you want to go?
I produced a litany of behaviours that were running counter to this goal.
CEO’s will tell me that they want to be focused on high level strategy, looking to the future and maintaining a conceptual overview.
I ask them, which of their actions are taking them in the exact opposite directions of where they say they want to go?
They quickly produce a litany of behaviours that are taking them in the exact opposite direction.
Embarrassment might be the start point but after the initial shock I was able to move to quiet decernment and see the truth of it.
We all have actions that take us away from where we want to go, exposing them is the first step in changing them.
Clarity and speed are the reward for doing so.
