How you can Rapidly calm your nervous system as a CEO/CXO/Leader
Rapidly calm your nervous system.
Do it often
Your nervous system acts in response to the meaning it attaches to sensory information gathered from the current environment.
Go to a place with an open view - sea or forest, top of a mountain. Any big open spaces. Failing that simply try and broaden your field of vision and your nervous system will calm due to the sense of safety and freedom.
Listen to rhythmical calming music.
Hum, single or gargle.
Walk, rub your body all or just your arms and hands to let your brain know it’s safe.
Rub your ears.
Smell lemons or lavender.
Stop and plan your next 15 minutes before a meeting, arriving home etc
Bring these things into your day and everything will get better.
Digestion, sleep, mood, health, relationships, mental presence.
When the nervous system is on high alert (fearful, anxious, excited) blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension go up.
Fuel storage, digestion, immune response, insulin activity, salivation, empathy, ability to read social situations and extract accurate meaning all go down.
Stuck in this heightened (sympathetic) state too long and you will experience low energy, wired energy, micromanaging, reactivity, relationship conflict, fat storage, poor sleep, health issues, pain, digestive issues, and more.
The ‘modern’ world invite and even desires this state.
It’s not a bad state, we need it, sometimes it’s incredibly useful.
It’s when it becomes automatic that it becomes a problem.
It becomes the solution to ever situation.
But we can’t excite ourselves to sleep, we can’t motivate someone out of overwhelm, we can’t eat at 100kph and expect our body to digest, we can force team alignment.
We have to remember to invite Yang to balance the Yin so to speak (that could the wrong way around).
How’s your state?
How many of the symptoms are you struggling with?
Ps did you rub your ears?
