These 4 macro skills play a part in everything a leader ever has to do. Master them and you can master any individual situation.
1. Nervous system regulation
Breathing in and out. Sleep and awake, Exercise and rest, focused and calm.
Eventually the quality of one mirrors the quality of the other. It’s great to be able to focus but the ability to create calm presence at will, even when your heart is racing and you’re filled with fear will determine your health, the quality of your relationships and your work.
1. Defuse and create
Stress is business for fear and a leader is met with it every day. Fear of failure, judgment, ignorance, incompetence, being blamed, taking a risk.
A leader must master the skill of not buying into the drama but defusing the stress and supporting those in their team to create a solution to their stress and take positive action.
This skill alone will be the difference between a culture of stress, abdicated responsibility and blame or proactivity, support and growth.
1. Empowerment
Do you have more work or less since hiring?
Are you fixing other peoples conflicts?
Are you finding creative solutions for other people?
Empowerment is a skill. It’s the one skill that will determine whether your business will scale or not and whether you become more or less productive for each new employee.
Do you have a process for empowering and how is it working for you?
1. Self leadership
How do you want to lead, work, live, look after your health, your kids, your relationships?
What do you value, what principles guide you, and what system do you use to grow, develop, learn for failure, correct your mistake, prioritise and right wrongs? You’re the role model now, how will you model the role?
That’s self leadership. How you do it will determine both your life and the success of your business and its culture.
What’s your system for these big 4?
Do you have one?
Do you know what it is?
How’s it working for you?
