I am a reader, I wasn’t always and my reasons frequently change.
Right now I read because I love stories and I’m fascinated by how other people view the world. I’m mostly reading fiction at the moment. I get my neuroscience information directly from studies.
I don’t believe there is a success correlation with reading though.
I’ve seen a couple of CEO’s read “Good to great” document the insight and set wheels into motion as a result.
I’ve seen many many more read, feel insightful and implement nothing.
That’s the thing I guess, consumption can and more often does train us to become consumers who rarely act.
Whether it’s books, podcasts, or social media,
You can’t read your way to success, you can’t consume you way out of stress, you can’t learn your way to removing bad habits or creating new ones.
The success and the actual learning is always in the action taken.
My most successful clients move incredibly fast while also working fewer hours than most.
But they act against those particular to do’s that will have the greatest impact.
And most of them consume little or not at all.
Now, I don’t think they are successful because they don’t read but the job of much of the marketing we are bombarded with is to convince us to consume AND that success lives in the consumption AND it does a pretty good job.
Something I ask myself often is, are you acting against the problems, challenges or obstacles in your life right now?
Or are you medicating them with consumption?
