Are you pouring every ounce of energy, strength and focus into performance?
You are Going to Die
That statement has never resonated with me in the way it was meant to.
I was taken to church and from the age of 4 and for many years I had nightmares.
Not about dying, but the opposite.
Living forever.
That was the promise.
It’s vastness was somehow too big for me to hold in my tiny brain and for some reason I fixated on it and it scared the crap out of me.
You are going to die,
Momento Mori
It’s a thought that inspires many my clients that are doing unfathomably big things in the world.
Some building companies that will and are having greater impact than the leaders of nations.
And the thought is, I’m going to die, let’s change the world.
There is a story a top sprint coach tells about his athletes in training.
They were all trying as hard as they could, pouring every ounce of energy, strength and focus into their performance.
The coach told them, before ending training for the day that he wanted them to do one more 100m but this time he just wanted them to relax, be present and enjoy the experience and not try to recorded a good time.
The coach then tells how they each ran the fastest time they ever had, including one, unofficial world record.
My own version of Momento Mori is this,
Are you going to live?
I believe the two must work together.
Eyes on the prices so often leads to a lot of collateral damage.
Your health
Your relationships
Your sense of self
Your love of life
Your mental health
We’re all going to die that’s true but we forget the extraordinary odds of our being born in the first place.
We already did the hard part.
We’re playing we house money.
We’re here now, let’s not forget to live!
That’s what I help my clients do.
They are already goal focused.
I help them create a ride they love.
The inevitable result is that the goal becomes easiest to achieve too.
