Trying to STOP thinking about work doesn’t work
Here’s what to do instead
If you’ve tried to stop thinking about work you probably already know, it actually seem to make things worse.
The resistance increases the intensity, just like any habit you try to break with force of will.
You have an underlying belief that this overthinking is your most effective method for creating a solution to your current work problem.
Therefore resistance is a form of threat to your survival so it triggers an increased emotional response. Something like overthinking or super thinking if you like.
Instead, clearly outline WHEN you will focus on this problem.
HOW you will think about this problem.
WHO will help you think through this problem.
WHAT specific questions you will need answer to.
As soon as your brain BELlEVES this is a more effective method it will replace the old less effective method.
You cannot resist habits, you have to upgrade them.
