“I’m not drinking today mate. I’ve got some things on that are REALLY important to me and so I want to have a clear head tomorrow “.

I remember the first time I said it.

And I really meant it.

It wasn’t just a line.

The conversation switched immediately to what I had going on.

I mean, imagine that.

Having something going on in your life the day you deemed so meaningful that all actions pointed in that direction.

He didn’t know it but I was also living that meaning in that moment.

That’s what purpose is.

It’s not some off in the distance goal.

It’s who you are being in every moment.

Who you are in your relationship

How you parent

How you act with your friends

How you eat, sleep, exercise

How you lead.

It’s all pointed in that direction.

It’s the red thread that runs through your life informing everything else.

That’s not to say I’m not incongruent with that purpose.

I constantly am and likely always will be.

There is no end to the improvements you can make to grow, make things even better and better serve your purpose.

But imagine not having a clear sense of purpose.

Why not go to bed late?

Why not get drunk tonight?

Why not have another cigarette?

It’s all meaningless anyway right?

Until that moment turning down the drink in the pub with a mate it wasn’t clear to me there was anything more important than that.

Life will always present multiple fun things you could do.

When we don’t decide on what is MOST meaningful to us then other people decide.

And what I’ve found is that most people aren’t really deciding. They think you are.

When they hear you say those words

“I’m not drinking today mate. I’ve got some things on that are REALLY important to me and so I want to have a clear head tomorrow .”

It’s like genuine MAGIC to them.

It’s what everyone is searching for, MEANING!

One they can point their life at.

I promise you, 99% of people who question your not drinking are secretly saying,

Please tell me how?
